About Form I-90
Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card, is used by lawful permanent residents to renew a green card that is expiring or has expired, or to replace a card that has been lost, stolen, mutilated, or contains incorrect information. Green cards issued to adults are typically valid for 10 years and must be renewed. USCIS recommends applying 6 months before your card expires. You should also file I-90 if your name has legally changed or your card has incorrect biographic information.
When to File I-90
๐ Expiring Card
Your green card expires within the next 6 months. Apply early โ processing can take 8โ36 months but USCIS issues a receipt notice extending your status.
๐ Lost or Stolen
Your card has been lost or stolen. File an I-90 promptly. You may want to contact local police and USCIS if stolen.
โ๏ธ Name Change
Your legal name changed after your green card was issued and you need a card with your current legal name.

FAQs โ I-90
Q: Can I still work with an expired green card?
A: Yes, with limitations. USCIS issues an I-797 receipt notice that serves as temporary evidence of your LPR status for up to 24 months while your I-90 is pending, which employers can accept on the I-9.
Q: Does renewing my green card affect my naturalization clock?
A: No. Renewing your green card does not reset your continuous residence or physical presence calculation for naturalization purposes.
Q: Can I travel internationally with an expired green card?
A: It is more difficult. Airlines may not board you and re-entry at the border can be complicated. It is strongly recommended to have a valid card or at least the I-797 receipt notice before traveling.
